Italy is a peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. Its territory boasts a variety of geographical, climatic and cultural environments. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Tyrhennian Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. Its only land border consists of the Alpine arc, along which Italy borders with France to the west, Switzerland and Austria to the north, and Slovenia to the east.
